Dried split peas are magical in soups, especially when cooked in a slow cooker. After a few hours of cooking, split peas completely break down and turn into a naturally creamy and absolutely scrumptious soup. So yum!

I noticed that many split pea soup recipes out there recommend ham bones as a must-have ingredient to enhance the flavor. Since I always have beef bone broth on hand, cooking split peas with it seems to be a no-brainer.

If you are like me and usually make your own broth at home, you know that I simmer beef bones with onions, carrots, celery and bay leaves for 24 hours and let all the collagen in the animal bones be broken down and released into the broth, supplying it with an insane amount of protein, antioxidants, and amino acids, which helps heal our gut lining and improve our immune system. Of course, the amazingly rich and meaty flavor is a fantastic base for any types of soup.

Since we’ve got so much flavor and health benefits going on in the beef bone broth, you don’t need ham bones for this split pea soup recipe.

“What if I want some actual meat in the soup? There’s meat attached to the ham bones but all the meat and bones are discarded from the bone broth after cooking.” You say.

I hear you. That’s what these cooked bacon pieces are for! They not only add a great texture to the creamy split pea soup but also bring some additional flavor. I mean it’s bacon!!

With all the ingredients on hand, you literally dump them into your slow cooker and that’s all you need to do. This slow cooker split pea soup is THAT easy to make.

Now, if you don’t have the time to make your own beef bone broth at home, stock up some organic grass-fed bone broth. I am not talking about the bone broth that you see in many stores because they neither use good-quality bones nor simmer it long enough. My choice of bone broth has always been Kettle & Fire whenever I am running low because it’s the only brand that I trust and offers a homemade flavor.

Hope you enjoy this slow cooker split pea soup with bone broth as much as I did. Leave a comment and let me know what you think once you get a chance to make it. I can’t wait to hear from you.
